The European Union could “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it calls “unwarranted” travel bans issued by the United States against five Europeans working on fighting digital hatred and misinformation, an EU official has said.
European Leaders Condemn US Move as ‘Intimidation’
Officials from Europe including Emmanuel Macron charged the US administration of “bullying and threats”, after the travel bans were placed on individuals that were central to campaigns to enact legislation governing US-based technology firms.
“For far too long, European activists have spearheaded organised efforts to pressure US companies to punish US perspectives they disagree with,” wrote a senior US official in a social media post. “The current administration will not stand for such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”
Broad Criticism Across Europe
Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives joined the French president in condemning the decision.
The bans were enacted this week against a former EU commissioner who helped draft the EU’s digital governance law, as well as several activists fighting false information, including Germany and the United Kingdom.
