Federal Reserve Lowers Interest Rates for Second Instance This Calendar Year During Economic Uncertainty

The US central bank reduced interest rates on midweek, marking the second reduction this year during economic turbulence originating from the government closure and trade duties.

Move Comes at Unprecedented Moment for Federal Reserve

The decision to cut the benchmark interest rate by a quarter point to a range of 4% to 3.75% comes at an unprecedented moment for the Fed. The authority has been under significant strain to cut rates despite ongoing price increases.

Fed Statement Notes Labor Market Shifts

In a announcement, the Fed stated that the jobless rate had increased but stays modest. “Job gains have slowed,” the release reads. “Inflation has moved up and stays moderately high.”

Federal Closure Complicates Central Bank’s Task

The ongoing federal government shutdown, now among the lengthiest in American history, has also complicated the Fed’s job. Collection of key financial statistics has been indefinitely halted as staff at the BLS are on leave during the shutdown.

Information Shortage Affects Monetary Moves

The Fed usually studies BLS data to assess labor market conditions, including the count of employment gains added to the economy and the current jobless percentage. The last jobs report was published in early September, before the shutdown, and gave a relatively bleak snapshot of the jobs market in August.

The figure of positions added to the economy in the summer month was lower by more than 100,000 since the spring, and joblessness crept up to four point three percent – the highest since 2021.

Private Data Show Ongoing Slowdown

Though BLS was set to publish September’s job market report in the start of last month, it suspended its publication once the shutdown started. Private payroll firm ADP indicated earlier this month that the business segment cut thirty-two thousand jobs in last month, a sign that the job market is continuing to slow.

“Supply as well as demand for labor has fallen quite sharply,” central bank head the Fed chairman said earlier this month, a trend he had previously attributed stems from immigration and tariff policies.

Inflation Report Reveals Moderate Rise

Though BLS’s employment data has been paused, the agency still released its inflation report for September that showed that costs are rising, although gradually. Prices increased three percent over the past twelve months, the peak since the start of the year. In April, the yearly price increase was 2.3%, the lowest it has been since 2021. The central bank’s goal price increase is two percent.
